Meet Damien

Born in London, I left school back in 1993 after finishing my GCSE exams. I was never a fan of sitting behind a desk for hours on end, I was always out and about, searching for opportunities. By the time I was twenty, I was living in Spain heading up a holiday company and overseeing their reps in three resorts; Barcelona, Ibiza and the Canaries. It was great fun but after five years it was time to settle and find a career so relocated back to Manchester.

I started work at Malmaison Hotels, originally as a receptionist but then promoted to Front of House Manager within eight months. I then moved into operations and moved to Liverpool for the opening of their brand new hotel as Deputy GM. Opening a new hotel was an amazing experience if not stressful at times! 130 new staff, 130 bedrooms in one amazing city. I'm pleased to have two of my Managers back then; Liverpool GM and now COO of Malmaison Scott Harper and HR Manager Emma Burkett as mentors to me now. I meet with them regularly discussing commercial and HR matters.

After Malmaison and before 1847, I also worked for No.1 Traveller a company who specialise in VIP pre-flight services. I headed up their operations department during their launch period. This was different to Malmaison as I was much more involved in the branding and structural side of the company rather than the operation itself.

After 18 months, I decided to take my own hospitality experience and that of a new company and launched 1847. Vegetarian myself since 11, I knew the options aimed at this market were limited so thought about pushing the boundaries. Back then a team of three opened in Manchester with two in the kitchen and me front of house. After an initial tough few months, our Manchester site turned into a success, building a loyal following and receiving great reviews.

Always one for opportunities, I then searched for another site and chose Birmingham. I felt this great city lacked in good quality vegetarian food. 1847 Birmingham opened in September 2013 and has grown month after month and has just enjoyed its best quarter to date. My ultimate goal is to push 1847 throughout the UK into key city centre locations headed by myself and a strong team. As of spring 2015, our team has grown from the initial three to twenty five including five apprentices. Not only do I want us to be the leading vegetarian restaurant brand, I also want to be the best employer and give opportunities to those leaving school, college or university.

Our ‘School’ will be core to 1847 as it’ll give our employees the best start to their careers and allow them to develop, within 1847 – our future rising stars. However in the meantime, if you’re visiting Manchester, Birmingham or Liverpool do pop by even for just a drink, it’s always a pleasure to meet new customers as well as our loyal following.

1847 is a small independent group of restaurants with sites in Manchester and Birmingham with our third opening autumn 2015 in Liverpool. Due to our expansion plans we’re always looking for people passionate about hospitality whether that be chefs, front of house staff or management.

Our Head Chefs create menus with a real sense of humour and ambition to push the boundaries of vegetarian cooking – you’ll find dishes influenced by the seasons, but expect techniques from the world of fine dining.

Our front of house teams strive to create an experience second to none for our customers whilst developing and offering an exciting cocktail, wine, beer and spirit list.

With each new site, we also look for management positions, whether that be in the restaurants themselves or based within our head offices in central Manchester.

1847 leads the way with our employee benefits and offer the whole team: 28 days annual leave, free meals on duty when working a full day, 50% off food and drink, regular informal catch ups, Christmas & summer parties, Saturday beers plus regular incentives including employee of the season and a £250 prize.

Plus our Managers can also enjoy; 6 days paid leave per year for volunteering, and unlimited paid annual leave providing targets are reached.

If you have what it takes to be part of this team, please email your CV to and we will keep it on file until a relevant position becomes available.
